February might be the shortest month of the year, but for Hog Roast Newton Abbot, it certainly didn’t feel small. We wrapped it up in the best way we know how – surrounded by great people, big smiles and the unmistakable scent of a hog roast slowly sizzling away.
The occasion? A beautiful wedding for a lovely couple who trusted us to feed 57 of their favourite humans on the biggest day of their lives. Months of planning and careful preparation had led up to this one afternoon but our team weren’t nervous – they knew they could pull it off.
Rik, our catering manager, did what Rik does best: turned up early, sleeves rolled up, quietly getting everything sorted and – most importantly – he gave the hog the time it deserved over a steady, low flame. Rik treated that hog like the superstar it was. Carefully scoring the skin, basting it with water, massaging salt into every nook and cranny before tucking it into a bed of sage and onion stuffing so the flavours could mingle beautifully. By the time 3:30pm dinner bell chimed, that pork had been gently roasting for hours – sizzling, spitting and turning irresistibly golden.
Before long, guests were drifting towards the serving table before we’d even called them up.
Of course, the hog roast is the hero – but every hero needs its sidekicks. So, we served it alongside homemade applesauce, soft floury rolls and a colourful spread of sides, including tomato and mozzarella salad, mixed salad, creamy coleslaw and generous helpings of both classic and sweet potato fries with salt, vinegar and a selection of Sauce Shop favourites on hand for anyone keen to customise their plate.
The couple had also asked for grilled sausages and vegan vegetable kebabs – halloumi optional – with flatbreads and cool tzatziki. At Hog Roast Newton Abbot, we’re big believers that everyone should feel catered for, not like an afterthought.
By the end of the evening, plates were empty, belts were loosened and compliments were flowing. For Hog Roast Newton Abbot, there’s no better way to close out a month than helping create memories like that.
